Program in Research in Information Technology

Welcome to the web site of the Program in Research in Information Technology (RIT) of The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation (AWMF). RIT was created in 2000 with a dual mission:

  • To stimulate the development of software that serves the Foundation's core objectives in higher education, scholarly communications, museums and conservation, the performing arts, and conservation and the environment.

  • To provide technology advisory and consulting services to AWMF staff in the performance of their responsibilities.

RIT pursues the first part of this mission primarily through the creation of "enterprise" software by means of distributed, collaborative open-source development projects.

In addition to RIT, AWMF has also sponsored JSTOR, ARTStor, Aluka, and Portico, four projects that provide technology platforms for different types of scholarly content and different aspects of the scholarly content life-cycle.

Those visiting this site for information about applying for funding should first read the Funding page; those interested in learning more about current and previously supported projects should start with the Projects page. The Events page is intended primarily for grantees; unless otherwise noted, RIT events are by invitation only.
