The purpose of the convening was to bring together organizations that play some role in supporting community arts portal/calendar projects, to explore the question of whether these projects could achieve their respective goals more effectively through some form of collaborative strategy.
In particular, Mellon Program Staff in both the Performing Arts and Information Technology programs at Mellon had become aware of many such projects around the country, most of which appeared to be wrestling with issues of functionality, sustainability, or both. The convening sought to bring together the leaderships of several of these projects to allow them to explore together the question of whether a collaborative technology strategy might improve functionality, sustainability, or both. In order to keep the discussions manageable, Program Staff decided to keep the meeting small, with the intent of opening the conversation to the entire "community of communities" should the discussions prove fruitful.
The two facilitators at the meeting, Doug McLennan of ArtsJournal and Matt Lehrman of Alliance For Audience/ShowUp.com, also explored the potential of collaboration to address other shared concerns, such as audience engagement, education, and marketing.
