Travel Directions

One can reach Princeton and the Nassau Inn by rail via Amtrak or New Jersey Transit. Newark Liberty Airport (NWK) offers easy and inexpensive access to Princeton via New Jersey Transit rail service.

GENERAL DIRECTIONS

Princeton, NJ is located in central New Jersey, easily reachable by road (Interstate 95/New Jersey Turnpike/US-1), rail (Amtrak from Boston or Washington, New Jersey Transit from NYC and Trenton) and air (New York/Newark and Philadelphia). It is 45 minutes from Newark airport by rail (about 1hr, 15 minutes by car).  New York City is one hour from Princeton by express train; one hour, 20 minutes by local train. Rail service from Princeton terminates in New York/Penn Station (aka Madison Square Garden), at 34th Street between 7th and 8th Avenues. Driving time to and from New York depends heavily on traffic: Princeton is 45 miles from Manhattan, but that can mean 70 minutes to 3 hours of drive-time depending on time of day and the particular destination in NYC.

For those flying, the best strategy is to fly to Newark and take NJ Transit rail to Princeton, then walk or take a cab from the rail station to the Nassau Inn. (There is an airport shuttle bus that serves the Nassau Inn, but rail service is faster and cheaper.) For those taking the train from Boston or Washington, Amtrak only stops at Princeton Junction at odd hours, so the quickest plan is usually to book Amtrak as far as Trenton (Northbound) or New York Penn Station (Southbound), then transfer and take NJ Transit the rest of the way. Princeton is on the "Northeast Corridor" line of NJ Transit; all Northeast Corridor trains stop in Princeton Junction.  Princeton station is connected to Princeton Junction by a railcar that meets almost every train.  The Princeton (town) rail station is about a 1/3 mile walk from the Nassau Inn (uphill); cabs routinely meet the railcar.

NASSAU INN

The Nassau Inn website is http://www.nassauinn.com/. Driving directions to the Inn are at http://www.nassauinn.com/directions/index.html. Mapping software or GPS users should use 10 Palmer Square, Princeton, NJ 08540 as the address for the main lobby, and 25 Hulfish St., Princeton, NJ 08540 for the parking garage.

DIRECTIONS TO THE NASSAU INN, PRINCETON,
FROM NEWARK LIBERTY AIRPORT

  1. After retrieving luggage and clearing security, look for the signs for the “AirTrain” monorail.

  2. Take the monorail to the NJ Transit/Amtrak train station (last stop)

  3. Purchase a ticket to "Princeton" (not "Princeton Junction") at one of the machines; if you buy the ticket on the train, there is a $5 surcharge. The machines accept US currency and most debit and credit cards.

  4. Take only one of the "Northeast Corridor" NJ Transit trains (other NJ Transit trains also stop at the airport). Take it SOUTHBOUND to PRINCETON JUNCTION. Depending on the time of day, Princeton Junction may be one or several stops away; on a local train, Princeton Junction is the next stop after New Brunswick (about 15 min. apart), two stops before Trenton.

    • NJT trains run frequently during morning, day, and early evening hours, and at least hourly throughout the night.

  5. At PRINCETON JUNCTION, change trains to "the Dinky", a railcar that takes you to the PRINCETON station. The Dinky meets almost every train; if it is not there when you arrive, it will be shortly.

  6. Exit the train at Princeton. Cabs will usually be waiting; if you prefer to walk, proceed to the street directly in front of the rail station and turn Right (uphill).

  7. Walk uphill several hundred yards to the end of the street, and turn Right onto Nassau St. (Princeton's main street). Princeton University dormitories will be on your right as you walk.

  8. Walk approximately 200 yards, until you see a newsstand kiosk on the left-hand side of the street. Turn Left onto the short side-street immediately adjacent to the kiosk.

  9. The side-street ends (splits) at the Post Office, with a small commons in front: this is Palmer Square. Follow the street to the Right, around and behind the Post Office, past a Banana Republic store.

  10. There is an archway over the street: this is the Nassau Inn. The doorway to the main lobby is directly underneath the arch, on the left-hand side of the street.

DIRECTIONS FROM PHILADELPHIA

It is possible to take trains from the Philadelphia airport to Princeton, but it requires two connections, and service is not as frequent as it is within-state; therefore, To reach Princeton, take SEPTA (Philadelphia's commuter rail service) from the Airport to 30th Street Station, then connect to Trenton, NJ. In Trenton, change to NJ Transit, and proceed Northbound (the only direction available) one or two stops to Princeton Junction. From Princeton Junction, follow Steps 5-10 of the directions above.
